We are a group with diverse backgrounds, and find and tackle interesting questions in host-microbiota research (group picture from summer 2024). If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Markus.

Markus Arnoldini
Markus is a group leader and senior scientist at ETH Zürich. He did his PhD at ETH and Eawag working on microbial ecology and evolution. During his time as a postdoctoral fellow at UC San Diego, he started working on the interactions of the gut microbiota and the host. The fascination with this topic has stuck with him, and his current research focuses on understanding how microbial ecology emerges from host physiology in microbial communites associated with animals.

Sebastian Hummel
Sebastian is a Postdoc currently focused on developing a mathematical model to identify parameter ranges that facilitate cooperation among gut bacteria, with the goal of informing targeted microbiota engineering. His research involves analyzing the aggregation patterns of bacterial communities in the cecum of mice and uncovering the driving forces behind these patterns. He is a trained mathematician with a BSc and MSc from TU München and a PhD from Bielefeld University. Prior to joining the lab, he worked at UC Berkeley on probability theory, population genetics, and quantitative immunology.
